Tips that I live by:
- Register with the US Embassy for your travel abroad @ http://www.travel.state.gov/
- Designate an Emergency Contact and have their contact details with you.
- Contact your credit card companies before you travel
- Photo copy your passport including the visa page if applicable
- Leave a copy of your itinerary with loved ones
- If traveling with your lap top get Skype. It is the cheapest way to stay in touch
